Common Law as a course is offered in many Nigerian Universities leading to the award of LLB (Hons). It’s in the Faculty, School or College of Law depending on school’s categorization.

Any students who successfully completed his or her studies in Common Law will eventually become a Lawyer with a qualification level of undergraduate.

Qualification Level: Undergraduate Degree

Course Duration: The course duration is 5 years for UTME Students and 4 years for Direct Entry Students starting from level 200 (year two).


Basic Admission Requirements

Common Law is one the most competitive course to get admission in Nigeria. However, candidates who made the basic admission requirements are offered admission into 5 or 4 years programme deepening on Mode of entry (UTME or DE).

Although, admission requirements slightly differ in many schools, here are the basic admission as well as waiver considerations.


UTME  Requirements

Candidates who wish to gain admission into Common Law programme at any University in Nigeria must have at least  Five SSCE credit passes to include English Language, Literature – in – English and any other three Arts/Social Science subjects.


JAMB-UTME Subject Combination

The JAMB UTME Subject combination for Common Law are Literature-in-English and any two other Arts/or Social Science subjects. A typical JAMB UTME Subject combinations for common law are (1) Use of English, (1) Literature in English, (3) Government and (4) Christian Religious Knowledge (C.R.K.) or Islamic Religious Knowledge (I.R.K.)


Special Admission Considerations for JAMB UTME Candidates 

(i) ILORIN requires Literature-in-English plus any two subjects



(i) BAYERO and UDU require Arabic

Direct Entry Requirements

(i) Two ‘A’ Level passes in GCE/IJMB in Arts or Social Science subjects.
(ii) First Degree (Second Class Lower) of an accredited University.
(iii) Diploma (Upper Grade) in Law


Special Admission Considerations for Direct Entry Candidates 

(i) ILORIN accepts passes in the following:-

(a) HND (excluding Secretarial Studies);

(b) ACIS;.

(c) ACA, AIB.

(d) Other full qualifications in Accountancy


(f) Two year Diploma in Social Works (credit)

(g) Two year Diploma in Law of accredited/government institution with at least Upper Credit grade.

(h) ‘A’ Level pass in English Literature may be considered in lieu of ‘O’ level requirement in Literature-in- English

(i) A Pass grade in ‘O’ Level Mathematics is required.

(j) Degree holders need not possess Literature-in-English and Mathematics.

(k) Where a Diploma is of four grades:-Distinction, Merit and Pass – Credit grade is accepted for Direct Admission.

(ii) ILORIN does not require English Literature for degree holders.

(iii) ILORIN accepts “A” level English Literature in lieu of Literature-in-English. Also accepts Commercial subjects.
