Islamic and Sharia Law as a course is offered in many Nigerian Universities leading to the award of LLB (Hons). It’s in the Faculty, School or College of Law depending on school’s categorization.
Any students who successfully completed his or her studies in Islamic and Sharia Law will eventually become a Islamic Lawyer with a qualification level of undergraduate.
Qualification Level: Undergraduate Degree
Course Duration: The course duration is 5 years for UTME Students and 4 years for Direct Entry Students starting from level 200 (year two).
Basic Admission Requirements
Islamic and Sharia Law is one the most competitive course to get admission in Nigeria. However, candidates who made the basic admission requirements are offered admission into 5 or 4 years programme deepening on Mode of entry (UTME or DE).
Although, admission requirements slightly differ in many schools, here are the basic admission as well as waiver considerations.
Candidates who wish to gain admission into Islamic and Sharia Law programme at any University in Nigeria must have at least Five ‘O’ level SSCE (WAEC/NECO) credit passes in Arts or Social Sciences to include English Language and Islamic Studies or Arabic. Some schools accepts a combination of O’Level Results for admission consideration.
JAMB-UTME Subject Combination
The JAMB UTME Subject combination for Islamic and Sharia Law are Any three Arts or Social Science subjects including Arabic or Islamic Studies.
Special Admission Considerations for JAMB UTME Candidates
(ii) BAYERO requires Islamic Studies/Arabic and Literature in English for Islamic and Sharia Law.
(ii) LASU requires a credit pass in literature in English.
(iii) ILORIN accepts any three other subjects.
(i) BAYERO and UDU require Arabic
Direct Entry Requirements
Candidates who wish to gain admission into Islamic and Sharia Law programme at any University in Nigeria at direct entry level must have two ‘A’ level passes to include Islamic Studies or Arabic
Special Admission Considerations for Direct Entry Candidates
(i) ABU and ILORIN accept Diploma in Sharia and Civil Law with at least merit grade. (ILORIN requires Upper credit).(ABU does not accepts any other Diploma)
(ii) MAIDUGURI and UDU accept Diploma in Islamic Studies and Arabic Studies at Credit level.
(iii) BAYERO does not accept NCE. BAYERO accepts Diploma in Law (Upper Credit); Advanced Diploma in Legal Studies of BUK (Merit).
(iv) LASU accepts degree with minimum of third class and also accepts a two year LASU Diploma in Sharia/Islamic Studies or Arabic, not lower than Upper Credit plus Credit in five subjects to include English Language, Literature in English, Islamic Studies or Arabic Studies and any other two subjects at ‘O’ Level. Also accepts its own Foundation Programme.
