Medicine and Surgery as a course is offered in many Nigerian Universities leading to the award of M.B.B.S., or MB.B.Ch.B. It’s in the Faculty of Health Sciences or Clinical sciences depending on school’s categorization.

Any students who successfully completed his or her studies in Medicine and Surgery will eventually become a Medical Doctor with a qualification level of undergraduate.

Qualification Level: Undergraduate Degree

Course Duration: The course duration is 6 years for UTME Students and 5 years for Direct Entry Students starting from level 200 (year two).

 

Basic Admission Requirements

Medicine and Surgery is one the most competitive course to get admission in Nigeria. However, candidates who made the basic admission requirements are offered admission into 6 or 5 years programme deepening on Mode of entry (UTME or DE).

Although, admission requirements slightly differ in many schools, here are the basic admission as well as waiver considerations.

 

UTME  Requirements

Candidates who wish to gain admission into Medicine and Surgery programme at any University in Nigeria must have at least Five (5) SSCE (WAEC/NECO) credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Some schools accepts a combination of O’Level Results to admission consideration.

 

JAMB-UTME Subject Combination

The JAMB UTME Subject combination for Medicine and Surgery are Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

 

Special Admission Considerations for JAMB UTME Candidates 

(i) UNN accepts Physics with Chemistry (as a single subject) for Physics and Chemistry. UNN requirements at one sitting.
(vii) ILORIN requires five O Level credit passes at only one sitting and minimum score of 240 in JAMB examination.
(v) BENIN, IBADAN, IMSU, ABSU, EBSU, UNIOSUN, ANSU, DELSU and BOWEN require the O level Credits at one sitting.

 

UTME SUBJECTS:
(i) UDU and MAIDUGURI accept Mathematics in lieu of Physics.

 

Direct Entry Requirements

Candidates who wish to gain admission into Medicine and Surgery programme at any University in Nigeria at direct entry level must have

(i) ‘A’ level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology in addition to UTME requirements stated above.
(ii) Bachelor of Science Degree (BSC or BOS) in relevant fields.

 

Special Admission Considerations for Direct Entry Candidates 

(i) UDU, MAIDUGURI and EBSU accept ‘A’ level pass in Mathematics in lieu of Physics.

(ii) LAGOS as in Dentistry.

(iii) BINGHAM, NDU and PHC – No Direct Entry

(iv) OOU and CALABAR accept Degree in Science not below Second Class Lower Division.

(v) CALABAR accepts Degree (not below a good second class lower Division) in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory, Biology, Zoology or Chemistry. Does not

(vi) ABSU, AAU and OOU accept Degree in related fields. accept IJMB for Direct Entry.

(vii) BSU, ILORI, IMSU and LASU accept a good Honours degree (second class upper) in relevant discipline.

(viii) JOS requires D/E candidates to fulfil UTME Entry requirements.

(ix) BENIN accepts:
(a) At least three “A” LEVEL PASSES (Not more than one C Grade or minimum of 12points) in Biology or Zoology, Physics and Chemistry at NOT MORE THAN ONE SITTING.
(b) At least a second class upper division from a recognised University in either B.Sc Biological Sciences or B.Sc. Medical Sciences.

(x) ABSU and ILORIN all candidates no matter their mode of admission are required to have GCE ‘O’ level or equivalent with credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at one sitting and same sitting.

(xi) ILORIN accepts B.Sc (Second Class Honours) in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology, Zoology and other Basic Sciences fields. Also accept a minimum aggregate of 13 points.

(ii) LAGOS as in Dentistry.

(iii) BINGHAM, NDU and PHC – No Direct Entry

(iv) OOU and CALABAR accept Degree in Science not below Second Class Lower Division.
