Youths seeking admission into tertiary institutions in the country often encounter problems, but these problems have not quite been defined in some cases. Despite several attempts and interventions by government, the problems have remained, causing anxiety and discomfort among the teeming youths across the country.
The success of any school system to some extent depends on the attitude of the teachers. If teachers have no commitment in teaching or if their approach to certain subjects or courses is not good enough, the students are bound to have problems. Some teachers are known to have killed the interest of their students in the subjects or courses they handle. This is quite discouraging.
Some teachers spend the whole period allotted to their courses in telling stories that cannot impact positively on the lives of their students. If only all teachers know the influence they exact on their students, many of the problems students are encountering in the course of their studies will be eliminated. Unfortunately, some teachers are not just worth being called by that name.
Any teacher or lecturer that cannot generate enthusiasm for learning through personal involvement with the subject matter or communicate a sense of excitement and contagious intellectual thrill will not encourage the students to learn.
A child’s upbringing tends to affect his attitude to learning. Too much restriction on a child can have a lasting effect on his learning to the extent that he may become withdrawn or anti-social and avoid every form of interaction with his fellow students or even teachers.
Kahl said parental attitudes were more important in predicting aspirations of the children toward continuing their schooling and success in school than status; it’s expected from parents not to expect much from their children because too much pressure can lead to failure. Much pressure and push on the children can lead to academic failure. In the same vein, some parents over-pamper their children to a point that this impacts negatively on the academic performance of their children.
Also tied to this is the fact that academic performance of students is affected by the level of their exposure to learning facilities and books. Not every parent can afford to provide their children things that would enhance their learning.
Another point is non-challance of parents towards the education of their children. Non commitment on the part of parents towards the education of their children affects their academic performance. Since such parents shun the responsibility to train their children at home, such children will naturally develop nonchalant attitude towards their education.
For a student to succeed there must be a conducive environment that will aid his concentration and learning. No effective teaching can take place under a chaotic situation where a teacher cannot handle his students effectively.
For a country to develop, the government must pay attention to education. The schools must not only be properly equipped, the teachers must be qualified to be able to produce quality graduates. The process of creating sustainable learning environment in terms of spatial distribution and efficient functioning of the school system is considered important in educational development.
Many students don’t visit their libraries which are not encouraging; some see their library as a mere reading rooms as they lack current books and journals that are necessary for knowledge improvement. The world is now a global village and Nigerian students are expected to be vast and deep in their learning.
Our country will be a great one if adequate teaching and learning facilities and equipment are provided schools and qualified teachers are retained and encouraged to do their work of bringing out the best in their students. Not only the country, the people too will be the better for it.
