Federal University of Technology, Akure also known as FUTA is one of the 5 Federal Universities of Technology established then when Federal Government passed a law setting up such universities that would enable her graduates have both theoretical and practical knowledge of technologies in 1980.
Therefore, FUTA was founded in 1981. The university is located in Akure in Ondo State, South West Nigeria. FUTA currently has 2 campuses at Obanla and Obakekere as well as an expanse of land on Owo-Benin Road.
On 22nd January, 1983 the University had a matriculation for her first 149 students though the University now commands over 15,000 students. The motto of the University is Technology for Self Reliance.
Just like every other Nigerian federal university, FUTA is originally headed by a Chancellor who is often a royal father and followed by a Vice Chancellor who is an academic.
The Vice Chancellor oversees the daily affairs of the University. Furthrrmore, the University is very renowned in producing quality graduates and can boast of many of them excelling in one area of specialization or another.
The faculties of the University include School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, School of Engineering and Engineering Technology, School of Earth and Mineral Sciences, School of Environmental Technology, School of Management Technology, and School of Science.
Furthermore, the current Chancellor of FUTA is Alhaji Isa Mustafa Agwa I (The Emir of Lafia) while the Vice Chancellor is Professor Adebiyi Daramola. Just like FUTO, FUTA is not a conventional university that offers a wide range of courses as their courses are mostly science and technology related. The University does not take foreign students.

All courses offered by FUTA are fully accredited both by National University Commission and other regulatory bodies which directly accredit such courses.
For example, during an occasion of certificate of accreditation issuance to Department of Transport Management Technology in the University, the VC announced that all courses offered by the University had been accredited.
Already the professional body in charge of Transport Management in Nigerian universities, Chartered Institutes of Logistics and Transport was on ground to accredit the department.

Just like a similar university in Owerri, FUTO, FUTA does not study a lot of courses because of the goal for which they were established.

Federal University of Technology Akure HOTELS AND FEES
Application for room allocation at FUTA is done online at www.futa.edu.ng. Once you are on the website, click on the Undergraduate and then Accommodation Application. Priorities are given to freshmen, disabled people, final year students, and sports men and women.
Applicants are expected to specify the type of accommodation they want. Old hostels cost 8,090 while new hostels cost 18,090. All application forms must be submitted online.
Please note that the charges are not fixed. 400L students are not entitled to hostel accommodation. After 3 days, the advertisement for hostel accommodation expires and students are expected to pay only when their names are published online as those eligible to own a hostel accommodation.

FUTA has fared well when compared with both fellow Federal Universities of Technology and 2nd generation Nigerian universities.
For example, in a recent ranking of all the universities in Nigeria and Africa by Journals Consortium, FUTA came in as the 10th Best University in Nigeria and 49th in Africa.
Federal University of Technology Akure POSTGRADUATE COURSES
FUTA offers courses in Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s Degree and Doctorate of Philosophy levels. Application forms cost N20,000 only.
Listed below are the basic requirements for the study of postgraduate programme at FUTA:
FUTA Post Graduate Diploma
Interested candidates must have 5 Credit passes in O’ Level (including English and mathematics) and any other relate subjects in their courses of choice in the University.
Higher National Diploma (HND) of at least lower credit from a recognized polytechnic. Also, a candidate may possess a relevant degree of not less than 3rd class division from a recognized university in Nigeria.
Professional qualifications like ACA, AIB, ACCA, ACIS, etc are also accepted.
FUTA Master’s Degree: Interested candidates must have 5 Credit passes in O’ Level (including English and mathematics) and any other relate subjects in their courses of choice in the University and are expected to have completed their compulsory NYSC.
A good BSC from a recognized university with second class honours of CGPA at least 3.00 on a scale of 5.00 or 2.50 on a scale of 4.00 in a related intended field of study in FUTA.
A Bachelor’s Degree of PGD (Upper Credit) from any recognized university and Higher National Diploma certificate.
Directorate of Philosophy: all interested candidates must possess a Master’s Degree from a recognized university with a CPGA of not less than 3.50 on a scale of 5.00 and/or 60% minimum average score.
And finally, any other qualifications approved by FUTA senate will be considered.

Federal University of Technology Akure GRADING SYSTEM
Just like many Nigerian universities, FUTA uses the NUC standard for grading its students. This means that for NUC programmes, grading is done on a scale of 5.00.
The rundown is shown below:
First Class Division: (100 – 70 with 5.00 – 4.50 CGPA)
Second Class Upper Division: (69 – 60 with 4.49 – 3.50 CGPA)
Second Class Lower Division: (49 – 45 with 3.49 – 2.40 CGPA)
Third Class Division: (49 – 45 with 2.39 – 1.50).
Notice that National University Commission has since abolished the Pass Grade in Nigerian universities.
This means that any student who scores below 45 in exam is assumed to have failed it.
All prospective UTME candidates of Federal University of Technology, Akure must compulsorily sit for their Post UTME screening test before they are considered for admission. Post UTME constitutes the platform through which most FUTA undergraduates gain admission to the University.
Candidates from UTME must score 200 and above. Please note that these scores are subject to change from time to time. And to be considered for admission, all candidates must have 5 Credit passes in English Language and subjects relevant to their course of choice in not more than 2 sittings. Post UTME test scratch cards are sold at N1000 only at designated banks announced by the University.
Furthermore, Direct Entry candidates must possess the same subject requirement above (that is 5 Credit passes in O’ Level) with OND, NCE, HND, etc.
The University also allows students from other institutions to be transferred to it. These students must meet compulsory requirements approved by the senate.
Application forms for transfer are available at the University and are given after payments are made. Finally, students can do deferment of admission when there is cogent reason for that.
These students must fully satisfy all department requirements, and applications forwarded to the admission officer not later than the middle of the first semester.
Federal University of Technology Akure DURATION OF STUDIES
Because of its unique nature and based on the fact that is strictly a Federal University of Technology, ALL courses in FUTA take 5-year duration period except Architecture which is 6 years.
Also, all freshmen irrespective of their departments do the same courses in 100L.
Postgraduate Diploma (PGD): full time students spend 18 – 24 months while part-time students spend 18 – 36 months.
Master’s Degree: Professional students normally spend 18 to 24 months.
