University of Lagos is also known as UNILAG is one of the best Federal Universities in Nigeria. The establishment of University of Lagos in 1962 was necessitated by the need to rapidly develop Nigeria after independence from Britain in 1960.

Ever since its establishment, University of Lagos prides itself on the production of quality graduates who have positively driven Nigerian economy to enviable heights by contributing directly and indirectly. UniLag is a university administered by capable Nigerians with accomplished track records in their careers.

The school is presided over by a senate which makes major academic decisions and a separate Council for the College of Medicine. Just like other Nigerian schools, the University has a Chancellor who confers all degrees to deserving grandaunts and a Vice Chancellor who oversees the daily affairs of the University.

Well, the student has a union body which represents their interests and this body is known as Students’ Representative Council (SRC). The school started by admitting 46 students but now boasts of thousands of students. Also, University of Lagos originally started with 3 faculties but commands 12 faculties which include Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Engineering, Law, Pharmacy, Social Sciences, Science, Environmental Sciences, Education, Dental Sciences, and Business Administration.

After from the addition of these new faculties, the University also has a Distance Learning Institute, and Postgraduate studies. As a way of generating money commercial for the University, the school has established many commercial outfits including the popular UniLag Consult and Unilag Ventures. Also, the motto of the University is In deed and in truth, and they are nicknamed Akokites.

University of Lagos HOTELS AND FEES

At University of Lagos, hostel and fees are primarily not fixed. Also, because the University is a Federal University in Nigeria, their fees are relatively affordable and reasonable considering the fees of surrounding universities.

Note that the school authorities reserve the rights to change the fees of the school without prior notice of the public. Hence the school provides accommodation for students but it barely enough to carter for huge number of students admitted by the institution. The hostels include 16 Halls of Residence, 6 for male students, 7 for female students, and 2 for postgraduate students.

University of Lagos RANKING

University of Lagos always comes top whenever universities in Nigeria are ranked no matter the parameters used.

This is because the school authority has continuously made concerted efforts since inception to improve the course content, research, infrastructure, working conditions, learning environment and other factors that affect smooth running of universities in Nigeria.

For example in July 2015, according to Journals Consortiums, University of Lagos was 4th Best University in Nigeria as well as 20th Best University in Africa after about 1,447 universities were compared by the Consortium.

University of Lagos POST UTME

Just like every other university in Nigeria, Post UTME is a compulsory requirement expected of candidates intending to gain admission to study any courses of their choice at the University. All candidates are required to sit for Post UTME after reaching the compulsory JAMB score of 200 (which is subject to change) and above.

Candidates are expected to purchase the exam scratch cards with the sum of 1,000 only. The instructions on how to register for the exam is displayed on the University’s portal as shown above.


For candidates who intend to further their education at Unilag, they are expected to have a Bachelor’s degree in a recognized university or anyone from the University who holds qualifications recognized by the University, and must have completed NYSC.

University of Lagos offers Post Graduate Courses in Graduate Diploma, Masters’ Degree (M.Sc.), and up to Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). Candidates who are eligible to do M.Sc are those who have a Second Class Upper Division with a minimum CGPA of 3.50.

All candidates must contact their respective departments before applying for the department to check for the availability of supervisors. Also, for a candidate to be qualified to do Ph.D at Unilag, he or she must have a CGPA of 4.00 and above from Master’s degree. Contact the school to find out the available courses before applying.

University of Lagos GRADING SYSTEM

At University of Lagos, Grading System is done on a scale of 5 just like that of every other university in Nigeria. The rundown is as follows:

First Class Division: (100 – 70 with 5.00 – 4.50 CGPA)

Second Class Upper Division: (69 – 60 with 4.49 – 3.50 CGPA)

Second Class Lower Division: (49 – 45 with 3.49 – 2.40 CGPA)

Third Class Division: (49 – 45 with 2.39 – 1.50)

These grades determine what students graduate with after studying for a stipulated duration of his/her course.


Admission requirement of University of Lagos is at least 5 Credits (including English and Mathematics) in ONE sitting from O’ Level.

It is also important to note that gaining admission to Unilag is very difficult. This is occasion by the high population in the state seeking admission into the school.

University of Lagos DURATION OF STUDIES

University of Lagos uses the national education of 6-3-3-4 system of education in Nigeria, which means undergraduates spend at least 4 years doing a program in University.

Furthermore, all other courses offered at University of Lagos follow this schedule, but there are variations in courses like Law, Engineering (which requires 5 years), and Medicine and Surgery (6/7).
